This residential and light to high tech city is one of the largest in Los Angeles county, and yet it has beautiful- tree lined neighborhoods and offers its residents a real community feel. Torrance boomed in the 50's and 60's with mostly three bedroom houses. Newer homes have four or five bedrooms. Two thirds of residents own and the remainder rent here. Pockets of Torrance touch the beach on its’ 1.5 mile slice of the Pacific coast and residents in these areas enjoy the oceanfront lifestyle.Served by the Torrance Unified School District, education is strongly supported. Most schools rank in the 60 to high 90th percentile. Business is key in Torrance- with large financial centers, car dealerships, manufacturing and medical centers, hotels, restaurants, retail, Honda headquarters and an oil refinery. The major commercial district lies along Hawthorne Blvd. where you also find one of the largest shopping malls in America- the Del Amo Shopping Center. There are thirty parks and a whopping five libraries in the city. Torrance is a large town. Residents living in inland neighborhoods travel two to five miles to the beach, 19 miles to downtown Los Angeles and seven miles to LAX.
